Here are the answers to some of the questions I’ve received so far. I hope it clears things up for you. 🙂
I try to feature significant guitarists. With many iconic guitarists (Hendrix, Clapton, Page etc.) there’s hopefully no need for a discussion why they are presented on the site.
Some visitors might object to me featuring guitarists that are either young and upcoming or of a more obscure niche-popularity. That falls under subjectivity and almost needs to be expected. As anybody else I do have my personal musical history, my biases and preferences. However, there are a lot of highly guitaristic tracks that won’t be featured on GLV. Songs that I truly like, but that don’t make the cut.
Apart from the enjoyment factor of seeing master musicians at work, each featured video does have a purpose. The more the tagging system gets implemented and the more articles I write, things hopefully will make more sense.
When I planned the site, I created a master list of over 200 guitarists that either influenced me personally or that I think need to be featured. So, chances are quite high that guitarist X is on my list and I simply didn’t get around to him yet or haven’t found the kind of video/performance I like to analyze/comment on.
Have a look at the “legends” page. This is my master list of guitarists that I want to feature. I still might add some more names over time as I think of somebody, but with that list alone, I already have a lot of work in front of me.
Even though I consider myself open to lots of different styles, I too do have preferences and a personal subjective background. I might not be that familiar with a certain style and find it hard to find/post examples. Or, I haven’t found the right examples to feature yet and will add to the style in the future.
Actually, since GLV is a work in progress, I will add to every style in the future. Just more (and quicker) to some styles than others. 🙂
Quite honestly, I’m not sure.
My vision is to have an article/commentary for each and every video. Granted, not always in the 3000+ word range as with the initial articles, but still with enough valuable analysis. This takes a lot of time and I already have my masterlist of 200+ guitarists that I’d like to feature. That’s 200+ articles to write just with one video/guitarist.
Therefore feature requests might be somewhat depressing. But feel free to contact me and let me know, however, no guarantees from my side.
I try my best to provide valid information, but mistakes during research can happen. Please contact me and let me know what I did wrong and I’ll correct it.
Putting a song into the correct style category actually is harder than expected. Fortunately, there are many songs where it’s obvious. But there are a lot of videos where it is quite difficult.
Is this still genre A or are those other musical elements enough to put it into genre B?
I’ll definitely fine-tune the stylistic categorization over time and make it more granular. Right now, it simply doesn’t make sense to create clutter when there are not enough videos to warrant a sub-genre.
